Martu Night Patrol

The Martu Night Patrol operating as Jijiku Night Patrol is a community-led outreach program operated by NWS in partnership with local Martu leaders, BHP, Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa (KJ), WA Police, and Newman Futures. Established in June 2021, the program operates every night from 9pm -1am to help keep at risk young people safe in Newman. The program works with young people who may be vulnerable or living with complex family challenges, offering guidance, care, and safe transport and food during late-night hours.

What We Do

- Our team patrols the streets each evening, offering hot meals, water, a friendly presence, and safe transport to home or a secure space.
- The Patrol is predominantly staffed by Martu and Aboriginal community members, ensuring support is culturally responsive with young people and families.
- Young people spending time on the streets are offered a safe alternative to unsafe situations. We also connect them to ongoing support and services.
- The program creates employment opportunities for Martu people, strengthening cultural leadership, skills, and builds capacity and capability.

Why It Matters

Regional towns like Newman have limited after-hours support. The Martu Night Patrol fills a critical gap, providing safety, guidance, and connection when other services are closed. Over time, it has become a trusted support for families and youth, reinforcing community safety, cultural connection, and resilience.
